Sticky Leaves on Copper Beech Hedge

Question: I have a copper beech hedge which has already lost its leaves in uneven patches. There are no marks on the leaves but there was a sticky residue on the top side of the leaves before they fell off. I would very much appreciate your advice as to how to deal with this problem. There are two hedges opposite each other, one is worse than the other, they are about 6 feet high and up until now have been very healthy. Both hedges are about 18/19 years old. Answer:  The sticky substance on the leaves sounds like aphids, these little devils can cause damage without you even noticing. Last year my citrus tree got infected whilst it was outside. When I bought it inside I then noticed the stickiness on the leaves and it took ages for it to recover. This year I gave the tree a spray with RoseClear before bringing it indoors and it has been fine. I would suggest spraying both hedges now in the hope that it will halt the infection before next season. Here's a link to the product so you can find out a little more.
