Overwintering Cannas

Question:
What do I do with my canna this time of year it has lots of shoots at the base.
Answer:
Wait for the first frosts to blacken the leaves of the cannas then lift them. Cut off all the dying growth and remove as much soil from around the roots as possible. Leave them upside down somewhere cool and dry until totally dry. Once dry knock off any remaining soil, ensure that the rhizomes are hard and firm then store over winter in a cool, dry place. They can be replanted again once the ground has warmed up in the Spring. I see you live in Essex. As it is warmer down there then they may be OK in the ground overwinter but they need to be covered with a protective layer of straw. The drawback is that flowering may be late and/or poor next year. If you have Dahlias you should follow the same procedure.
