Removing Large Palms

Question:
I am about to buy a two bed house in South London with two palm trees growing very close to the house. The diameter of their trunks is about 10 inches. and their roots have been professionally planted in a bale. There is no cracking to the property do you recommend I remove them to avoid future subsidence.
Answer:
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "... professionally planted in a bale". Do you mean that the palm trees were planted in containers or wrapped up before being planted in the ground? If so then their roots will be restricted and therefore unlikely to cause problems in the foreseeable future. However, there are quite a number of varieties of palm so without knowing exactly which one it is it is difficult to say how large it will grow. Apart from the potential damage to house foundations there are other issues with having large trees close to the house. Firstly they block out light from the windows making the house seem dark. Secondly large trees take up lots of moisture from the soil and makes it impossible to successfully grow any other plants in the general area. If it were me, I'd me tempted to remove them to be on the safe side and to allow more flexibility with your gardening options.
